Letter to the Editor Template
A letter to the editor is an easy and effective way for you to become personally involved in bringing about positive changes for children throughout the state of Florida. Your letter has the potential to reach thousands and thereby alert community leaders, lawmakers, and the public at large to important issues affecting children and families in your area.
As with all letters to the editor, your letter should be clear and brief. A few paragraphs consisting of no more than 250 typed double-spaced words is sufficient. Long letters are less likely to be published and may have information removed for the sake of space. Furthermore, you should also check the requirements of the newspaper that you intend to submit your letter to. Different papers have different standards that must be met before a letter will be published.
That being said, the basic format of a letter to the editor is relatively straightforward. Below you will find a template that may be used as a guide in writing your own letter. Dear (name of the editor) or (Editor):
In the first paragraph, briefly introduce the topic and state your position. If you are referring to an article that was printed in the newspaper, remember to state the date and title of that article.
As for the next paragraph or paragraphs, this section should be dedicated to one or two key points related to the topic. You might wish to include how the issue affects you, your family, or your community. You might also want to use facts to bolster your viewpoint.
Finally, the conclusion should be a paragraph that sums up your argument and expresses what you think should be done concerning the topic under consideration. This section should be brief and should not reiterate the points elaborated on in the body of the letter. After this, you will simply conclude your letter and give the necessary contact information.
